Now is the time as American citizens that we can exercise a privilege that is the envy of most of the world. We can freely vote for those that will govern us. Take the time on Tuesday to cast a ballot. If you can't get behind one of the two front runners cast a protest ballot for a third party candidate. Don't let advertising agencies manipulate your vote. Take the time to understand the issues and make an informed choice. There have only been short periods in human history where this privilege has existed; don't let it disappear.

Recent News:

Rick was once again hopping around the globe. He started off the month in Italy, with his good friend Tommaso Girotto, they over saw the custom cutting of some fabulous Italian Olive logs. The quality and color of these logs are spectacular... more details will follow when the flitches arrive here in Oxford.

Days after his return from Europe he accompanied a customer down to the bayou in search of Bitternut Pecan. Their mission was to find enough Pecan to finish a high-end sitting room. It was a brief stay, but Rick is not known to pass up a trip to New Orleans.

Featured Wood: Big Leaf Maple (Quilted Maple)

Big Leaf Maple, Acer macrophyllum, is native to the Pacific Northwest spanning California thru Washington and The Yukon Territory thru British Columbia. As common as this tree may be to this region, figure mutations of curl, burl and quilt are quite rare- only one tree out of hundreds will be figured. The most prized of the bunch is the "Quilted Maple". Big "pillowy" bubbles of compression... when you see it, you just have to touch it...the picture to the right is a flat board!

This species can be referred to as "Pacific Maple", "Oregon Maple", "Broad Leaf Maple" or "Quilted Maple". It has similar properties and coloring to Hard and Soft Maple. Normal board dimensions run 4-18 inches wide and 4-12 feet long, however it is not uncommon for these trees to grow quite large; we have had logs up to 60 inches wide and 16 feet long. Uses for this material are endless; musical instrument makers treasure it for solid body electric guitars and acoustic six strings. If you would like more information please email our Maple Sales Manger, Chris Tankalavage at [email protected] or call (888) 814~0007.

Announcements: Two Enormous & Extraordinary Logs

Throughout the month of October we have been working on cutting two gigantic logs. First was a Claro Walnut that we purchased from Central California. This log measured 15 feet long and averaged 60 inches wide, 80 inches at the widest spot! As we started to cut we were absolutely thrilled to see the amazing color and figure pattern hidden within. This is a stunning flitch- possibly the prettiest Walnut we have ever had!

~If you would like to view pictures of this Claro Walnut please click here.

Our second log came from an Estate in Scotland. This staggering English Wych Elm averages 14 feet long and 60 inches wide, with 84 inches at the widest point. Taking days to cut, it was well worth the effort; these slabs are covered in beautiful, bright, burly grain that swirls in all directions!

~If you would like to view pictures of this English Wych Elm please click here. Please note: English Wych Elm is bright orange in color when freshly cut- as it dries it will change to gorgeous shades of gold!

Each of these massive logs contains over 2,000 board feet of one of a kind, breathtaking material. Both should be dry and ready for sale Fall 2010. If you would like more information or to reserve a board of your own please email Brian Hearne at [email protected] or call (888) 814~0007.

Head's Up for Newsletter Subscribers: Arrival of EBO Container!

Last week we received a container of about 4,000 board feet of English Brown Oak. Prized for it's rich brown color (caused by a special type of mushroom growing on the tree) this material sells fast! The dimensions for this load are random widths and lengths with a thicknesses range of 4/4- 5/4.

If you would like more information or to place an order please email our European Wood Sales Manager, Ed King at [email protected] or call (888) 814~0007.
